Hubert von Herkomer was born in Germany on 26th May 1849. Hubert's family to England and in 1857 settled in Southampton. Herkomer studied at Southampton School of Art, the Munich Academy and the South Kensington Art School, where like his fellow student Luke Fildes, he was influenced by the work of Frederick Walker.

Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) (b Waal, Bavaria, 26 May 1849; d Budleigh Salterton, Devon, 31 Mar. 1914). German-born painter, printmaker, designer, teacher, and writer who settled in England in 1857 with his father (a woodcarver) and became a British citizen. He established his reputation with The Last Muster—Sunday at the Royal Hospital.

The late Sir Hubert von Herkomer is the inspiration behind the Foundation. Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) was a distinguished painter, playwright, actor, composer and film director. His work left its impression on many, from Charles Dickens to Queen Victoria, who honoured him with a knighthood. Vincent van Gogh acknowledged him as an inspiration.

Hubert Herkomer was born in Bavaria. His father, a wood-carver emigrated to Southampton when Hubert was a child. He attended the South Kensington Schools from 1866, and studied under Luke Fildes [1843-1927]. Herkomer produced engravings for the Graphic magazine, early in his career. He worked in a variety of areas, particularly social realism, including the famous paintings On Strike [1891.
